Evolving and durable toys: a guarantee of quality and appeal
It’s a all-too-common scenario: barely used, already forgotten. In our society, many children are fortunate enough to live in abundance, and their toys reflect that. Toys designed to grow with them and last a long time become a real asset for nurturing their imagination, protecting their health, the planet… and our wallets. Food for thought.
Choosing toys appropriate for a child’s age is absolutely essential to support the different stages of growth and to stimulate the acquisition of new skills. However, the target age ranges are often narrow, constantly prompting the need for new toys. Proof of this lies in those overflowing storage boxes, those cluttered drawers and closets... With toys that have seen little use, even if they were once favorites. Children quickly tire of play options that are too limited and quickly become obsolete. The solution: toys that evolve with age and changing interests.

Modular toys and child development: the perfect match
They come in many forms: building toys of varying levels of complexity, active play toys that include seesaws, balance bikes, and ride-on toys... There’s no shortage of opportunities to offer toys that grow with children, both indoors and outdoors.
Instead of focusing on a single stage of growth, they emphasize varied, adaptable uses capable of satisfying changing interests. Children no longer play with them for just a few days or even a few months. They take pleasure in rediscovering them again and again, in different ways, as they grow. One toy, a thousand ways to play. By supporting development over the long term, evolving toys stimulate imagination and creativity, encourage greater concentration, and foster deeper thinking1.
To ensure a long lifespan2, it’s essential to choose sturdy toys made from high-quality materials. This way, they’ll accompany children for many years.

The relationship with play itself can be considered healthier. The joy of returning to the same source of fun, to a routine that is both stimulating and reassuring, are all factors that foster attachment. Children no longer jump from one activity to another. They learn to focus on what they are doing and to appreciate repetition.
Generally speaking, modular toys offer few visual and auditory stimuli. They do not rely on sensory overload to capture attention and actually foster more stable focus.
Another valuable benefit: a child may lose interest in an evolving toy that once captivated them. Let some time pass, then offer it again a few weeks or months later. You’ll notice a renewed interest, just as vivid as on the first day. Imagination needs to venture toward new horizons to renew itself.
Sustainability and mindful Cconsumption
Who hasn’t had this thought while sorting through toys? Setting aside those poor chosen ones that end up in the “to give away” box? Parting with certain toys means parting with memories. It means saying goodbye to a chapter of life. It’s turning the page, with a slight twinge of sadness. It also means buying, once again, toys that will only be enjoyed for a short time. On the other hand, toys designed to last, thanks to their versatility and adaptability, guarantee significant savings. While they may be more expensive to buy, their longevity and the time spent playing with them quickly make the investment worthwhile.
Without even realizing it, you’re also setting an example. Choosing durable toys helps instill values: those of responsible consumption, the fight against waste, and the importance of prioritizing quality over quantity3.

The choice of Mmaterials
Hoarding large quantities of cheap toys comes at the expense of safety. Uncertified manufacturing facilities, illegal imports, fragile materials, questionable substances... The media all too often report on recalls of children’s toys. Although a significant number have been flagged by the Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs, and Fraud Control (DGCCRF) - more than 870 items listed on the Rappel Conso website at the time of writing4 - it’s a safe bet that this represents only the tip of the iceberg.
Committing to sustainability through the use of safe, tested materials undoubtedly protects the health of those who will handle them.
The CE marking. This is mandatory; there are no exceptions. The safety standards defined by the European Union assess immediate physical risks (choking, injury, etc.), chemical risks (toxic or irritating substances, etc.), risks related to heat or electricity, hygiene risks (growth of bacteria, mold, etc.) and indirect risks to development (encouragement of dangerous behavior, etc.). The NF-EN71 standard. This European standard sets the requirements and test methods regarding the mechanical and physical properties of handmade toys. The ISO 8124 standard. Another guarantee of toy safety, it is published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and includes several subsections, notably: safety aspects related to mechanical and physical properties; flammability; migration of specific elements; requirements and test methods for swings, slides, and similar early learning toys for home use, both indoors and outdoors; determination of total concentrations of specific elements in toys; and age determination. The NF-Environnement label. Issued by the French Standardization Association (AFNOR), it certifies that toys are environmentally friendly from production through disposal. The European Ecolabel. Awarded by the European Commission, it guarantees that toys have a reduced environmental impact. The Oeko-Tex label. Designed for textiles, it ensures the absence of substances harmful to health, such as certain dyes, heavy metals, and pesticides. The PEFC and FSC labels. For wooden toys, they guarantee that the material comes from sustainably managed forests.
More sustainability, less waste
Minimizing our environmental impact as much as possible is another core value we must pass on to future generations. The first area of action - one that speaks directly to them - is their toys. Children are often very attuned to the issue of waste and become super-champions for the planet when the topic comes up.
Compared to household waste, the topic of toys is not frequently discussed. Yet toys with a short lifespan - mostly made of plastic and non-recyclable - generate massive amounts of waste5.
From the moment they are designed, they can already have a significant impact on the environment, through the choice of raw materials, manufacturing methods, and emissions from production sites...

It’s not always easy to make ethical and eco-friendly choices. To help you out, keep in mind that companies with a genuine commitment to the environment clearly communicate their values. A quick visit to their website will give you all the information you need with just one click.
Finally, choosing toys that are adaptable and durable is a forward-thinking choice. They also offer the priceless gift of seeing them passed down from older children to younger ones, generation after generation.
